Welcome to the Student Government Association!

We are your voice and advocates for student interests at Virginia State University.

Welcome Message from the SGA President

Greetings Trojans,

On behalf of the Virginia State University Student Government Association, it is my honor to welcome you to another exciting chapter in our journey toward Greater. The Student Government Association stands firm in its mission to represent and amplify the voices of every student, ensuring a campus environment that fosters leadership, innovation, and community.

Our goals remain centered on empowering the student body, enhancing academic and social experiences, and advocating for policies that address the diverse needs of our community. This year, we are especially proud to announce the launch of the first-ever VSU Student Government Association Annual Scholarship Fund, a groundbreaking initiative designed to provide financial support to deserving students and affirm our commitment to academic success and equity.

Among our additional achievements, we have made strides in improving campus safety, expanding student engagement opportunities, and collaborating with faculty and administrators to elevate Virginia State University’s legacy of academic excellence and cultural pride. These milestones are a testament to the passion and dedication of your SGA Administration, as well as the unwavering support of your peers.
Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our university. I encourage you to stay engaged, share your ideas, and participate in the dynamic activities and discussions that make our campus thrive.
We look forward to a year filled with growth, unity, and success. Greater Happens Here due to your continuous academic, social, and intellectual efforts.

With Trojan Dignity & Pride,

  2. Shared Governance

Virginia State University's Shared Governance system is based on the core values of:
    Informed and inclusive decision-making
Transparency and clarity of operations and decision-making
Open lines of communication between and among all components and members of the VSU community
    Accountability
    Mutual respect and trust
The governance principles of this system are intended to assure all members of the VSU community that they have a seat at the table: after all, a decision-making process based on an open flow of information, diverse involvement, mutual respect, and collective deliberations will advance the interests of the university as a whole.
The four representative governing bodies of the Shared Governance system are the University Council, the Faculty Senate, the Staff Senate, and the Student Government Association. Final decision-making authority will always rest with the President and the Board of Visitors. Moreover, administrators at the school and university level, as well as the representative governing bodies, will continue to have the responsibilities outlined in their respective job descriptions and/or constitutions and bylaws. However, under the Shared Governance system, all will have the opportunity to review, recommend, and decide based upon the informed input of other affected constituencies of the VSU community.
In the end, the Shared Governance system is designed to facilitate and support the growth of the university, the achievement of educational excellence, and the freedom of thought, inquiry, and scholarly/artistic expression.

These principles are more fully articulated in the Shared Governance Preamble.
