VASA Application and Grant 

The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) is an alternative option to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  

Virginia residents that meet one of the following criteria may file a VASA Application: Nonimmigrants, Undocumented, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or individuals otherwise ineligible to file the FAFSA.  

Students that fill out a VASA Application must meet either: Commonwealth's Domicile Requirements, Military Dependents Provision or Tuition Equity Provision Requirements

Please note: The VASA application provides access only to state and to some institutional financial aid programs. The VASA application does not provide access to federal student aid. 

Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Grant (VGAP)

Available to Virginia students who have an overall 2.5 high school GPA or better and evidence of need. Renewable for three subsequent years as long as the student advances to the next classification and funds are available. Student must be enrolled full-time. Awards may not exceed the cost of tuition.

Commonwealth Award

Available to Virginia students who have an overall 2.0 GPA or better and evidence of need. Renewable for three subsequent years as long as the student advances to the next classification and funds are available. Student must be enrolled full-time. Awards may not exceed the cost of tuition.

Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)

A limited number of graduate assistantship awards are granted to full-time graduate students. Students assist faculty in their assigned departments with tasks and responsibilities that may include grading, monitoring, leading lab and/or discussion sessions, offering office-hour assistance to students, providing research support, and/or performing clerical tasks. Awards are assigned based on merit and availability of funds. College Transfer Grant (CTG)

Students who complete their associate degree at a Virginia two-year public college and transfer to VSU may receive the Two-Year College Transfer Grant.

Award Information: Maximum annual base award is $1,000 ($500 for the fall term and $500 for the spring term). Maximum STEM-N bonus award of $1,000 ($500 for the fall term and $500 for the spring term) to students enrolled into a degree program within science, teaching, engineering, mathematics or nursing (see programs listed at the bottom of the CTG Application.) An additional $1,000 ($500 for the fall term and $500 for the spring term) to students enrolled at VSU. Visit Two-Year College Transfer Grant for criteria and application. VSU reviews final academic transcripts to determine eligibility. In some instances, eligibility will not be established until after the semester is in session.
