Records Management Office
Records Management Office is within the Administrative Services Division of the Police Department. The manager reports to the Deputy Chief of Police.
This office compiles all statistical reports on crimes on campus, incidents involving the publics' safety and maintains all of the department's law enforcement records. The Manager provides members of the public copies of pertinent offense, accident reports that occur on campus, and liaisons with appropriate insurance agencies. Crime victims may receive an in person copy of their individual police report, after the request is made in writing or on a form provided by the Department. This is at the discretion of the chief or his designee.
All offense reports are automated as of January 1999 and are readily available to the VSU Department of Social Work's Criminal Justice majors beginning in Fall 2001. The SWCJ department will utilize this data for criminal justice research purposes and will assist the police department in crime data analysis.
Pursuant to Virginia Code section 23-232.1, 211 criminal incident reports shall be made open to inspection and/or copying by any (i) citizen of Commonwealth, (ii) currently registered student of the University, or (iii) parent of registered student, during the regular office hours to custodian of such information. Criminal incident information (i) the date, time, and general location of the alleged crime; (ii) a general description of injuries suffered or property damaged or stolen; and (iii) the name and address of any individual arrested as a result of felonies committed against persons or property or misdemeanors involving assault, battery, or moral turpitude reported to the campus police, except where disclosure is prohibited by law; however, where the release of such information is likely to jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual, cause a suspect to flee or evade detection, or result in the destruction of evidence, such information may be withheld under the above-referenced damage is no longer likely to occur from the release of such information.
The Records Manager performs routine maintenance on our department website and revises the site on an as needed basis.
