Campus Safety Office
The Institutional Safety Office functions to promote Environmental Safety in accordance to applicable OSHA guidelines.
This office conducts regular inspections of all buildings and facilities on campus and provides detailed reports to the Chief of Police, the appropriate department office head or Vice-President, and building/facility manager. The University Safety Officer heads this office and ensures that all life safety issues are addressed and concerns itself primarily with fire alarms, site security systems, sprinklers, chemical usage and disposal, and other related areas.The Safety Office revises appropriate areas of the Contractor Safety Handbook and the Confined Space Entry Program.
The University Locksmith function is part of the Institutional Safety Office. This area functions to provide secure and working lock mechanisms in all campus buildings and facilities. The Locksmith provides keys to appropriate University personnel in accordance with the University Key Control Policy. The authority to issue keys and provide/replace keys and locks is delegated by the Chief of Police. Any other creation, distribution, or possession of keys to a state building or facility is a violation of State law (Section 18.2-503) and University policy. A Locksmith Request Form is required before any services can be performed. The forms shall be completed with the appropriate budget code and I.O. numbers before any services can be performed. Once this is completed, the Locksmith Service Request form shall be faxed to the office of the Chief of Police at extension 5629. The form is then given to the Locksmith for services to be performed.
