Extramural and Club Sports
Extramural and Club Sports gives college recreational sports participants an opportunity to compete, coordinate, officiate, and connect with skilled peers from other schools and take all the benefits of recreational competition to a higher level.
While there are a number of intramurals teams for each league which compete against each other, some of the leagues also put together traveling/extramural teams to play against other universities. Extramural teams compete versus some other institutions in Virginia like the University of Richmond, Hampton University, and Norfolk State. Extramural teams also compete in two national recognizes associations, Virginia Recreational Sports Association (VRSA) and the National Intramural-Recreational Sport Association (NIRSA)) as well. This is a great opportunity for players who didn't make the University teams to still have a chance to remain competitive.
In Spring of 2024, VSU had men’s and women’s travel intramural travel basketball teams. Both teams competed in the NIRSA Region I tournament at the University of Maryland-College Park. The men went 6-0 and became the Region I Champions with Christopher Towns becoming the tournament MVP. By winning the Region I tournament, VSU’s men’s intramural travel team was invited to the NIRSA National tournament at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Starting off the tournament at 4-0, the team ran into the reigning Champions, Air Force Academy, and lost in the quarterfinals.
