2021 Commencement Information FAQ’s

Is there a commencement ceremony?
Yes. The university will host an in-person ceremony for the class of 2021 and the Spring/Summer/Fall class of 2020 to celebrate their achievements on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at 9:00 AM. There will be ONE ceremony for ALL Graduates.

Due to low rsvp numbers, the scheduled 2:00 PM ceremony for the Spring/Summer/Fall graduates is canceled. All Spring/Summer/Fall 2020 graduates who submitted an rsvp will now participate in the 9:00 AM ceremony. In-person ceremonies will be held rain or shine.

How will Name cards, cords, and tickets be distributed?

Name cards, cords, and tickets must be picked up, in person, by the graduation candidate with a photo ID. Distribution will be on Friday, May 21st in the following locations:

For students unable to pick up during the above times; name cards, cords, and tickets will be available after rehearsal from 12:00-2:00 at Roger Stadium.

 

If I am a 2020 graduate, will I need to register to participate in the ceremony? How do I register?

Yes. Students are required to register to participate in the ceremony. Please see below for more information:

Where will commencement be held?

Commencement will be held at Rogers Stadium

Will there be a commencement rehearsal?

Yes. Commencement rehearsal will be 10:00AM – 12:00PM, Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Rogers Stadium for all participants.

Will tickets be required for guests to attend?

Yes. Due to a limited amount of guest seating, tickets are required for all guests attending the graduation ceremony.  Each graduate will be provided with two (2) general admission tickets. No additional tickets will be provided.

How will tickets be distributed?

Tickets must be picked up, in person, by the graduation candidate with a photo ID.  Tickets will be distributed on the day of rehearsal. 

How long will the ceremony last and will graduates cross the stage?

The actual ceremony will last approximately two hours. Due to COVID restrictions, we are currently exploring options to individually recognize students and cross the stage.

Do I need to participate in commencement to graduate?

No.  All students who meet their academic requirements, regardless of whether they will attend the ceremonies, will still receive their diploma in the mail.

If I don’t want to participate in any of the ceremonies, do I need to apply to graduate?

Will the commencement ceremony be recorded and live-streamed?

Yes.  The ceremony will be recorded and can be viewed live on the VSU webpage.  More information will be forthcoming.

If I am a 2020 graduate, will I need to register to participate in the ceremony?  How do I register?

Will health and safety precautions be in place at the in-person ceremonies?

Yes.  Face masks will be required.  The University will adhere to all health and safety guidelines for graduation ceremonies prescribed by the Governor’s 4 th Amended Executive Order 72.

Special Needs Accommodations

Commencement ceremonies at Virginia State University are accessible to all graduates and guests.  Accessible parking is available in Lot 29A (West side/Home side of the stadium).

Hearing Impaired

Sign language interpreters will be stationed on the stage. Please advise the ushers if you need to make use of the interpreters and they will seat you in a section with a clear view of the interpreters.
