Pre-College Summer Institute
VSU offers two Pre-College Summer Institutes (PCSIs). These HBCU summer programs are:
- Summer Transition and Enrichment Program (STEP) is designed to help students who have selected a STEM major and who have been accepted to VSU (but may or may not have chosen to attend VSU). This gives students a head start on undergraduate degrees by developing their key mathematics and language skills and exposing them to college life. This HBCU summer program will nurture these participants on campus for six-weeks during the summer preceding their freshman year.
- Summer Transportation Institute Program (STIP) is a four-week residential program for rising ninth and twelfth grade students. The institute is designed to familiarize students with potential careers in transportation and to prepare them for college. In addition to transportation related subjects, courses were taught in computer, mathematics, time management and communications. This HBCU summer program sets out to achieve two main objectives. These objectives are (a) to stimulate high school students to pursue higher education by exposing them to college life and the benefits of a college education, and (b) to increase the direct involvement of various government agencies and the private sector in this endeavor.
