Previous Students' Internship Experiences and Comments
Students were required to submit a page of their research experience. Below are some of the excerpts.
Darlene E.: “I worked as a Traffic Engineering Intern for Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) at the Central Office in the city of Richmond. I have gained valuable and unforgettable experience in the engineering world in my six months as an intern. The opportunities to work on numerous projects in multiple fields, such as Data Analysis, Traffic Control Devices and Safety, have given me a good understanding of the work that is being performed in the Traffic Engineering Department (TED). This internship helped enhance my problem-solving skills. I also learned a lot about technologies related to traffic engineering, which aided with my first job out of college. This internship gave me a glimpse of how it's like to work with real engineers and how beneficial it was to learn straight from them.” Darlene graduated BS in Computer Engineering in May 2014 and is currently employed as a System Integration & Test Engineer Associate at Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management - Rockville MD.
Phillip K. who graduated Dec 2014 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, (MET), has said “On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people.” Phillip is currently working as an Engineer at General Dynamics Electric Boat.
Reginald B.: A Manufacturing Engineering student, who did the internship this summer has said, “Within my internship, I have been placed in the Central Materials Division where all operations for a project have been conducted. I worked directly with Quality Assurance and Structures and Bridge Sector where I have been granted the opportunity to shadow some amazing people. Overall, I would say my experience was great! I enjoy every part of it. It allows me the opportunity to learn, and meet new people, develop relationships with those who have delivered great advice and encouragement. Working with professionals gives you a little more drive because it reminds you why you are doing what you are doing, how far you came and how far you have to go. I really enjoyed working with the people of the VDOT community and if I have been granted the opportunity to go back, I would.”
