Dr. Cheryl E. Mango, the creator of the nation’s first HBCU History course (HIST 349 at VSU, first offered in the year 2020), framed HBCU Studies, the world’s first interdisciplinary academic discipline dedicated to the systematic, classroom study of Black Colleges via an array of innovative, HBCU-focused multi-level courses, theories, and methods geared to transform the comprehension of and landscape for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Virginia State University proudly serves as the nation’s first institution to implement the robust HBCU Studies curriculum. Currently, the interdisciplinary HBCU Studies Program is housed in the History and Philosophy Department at VSU. For more information on HBCU Studies, potential partnerships, or other inquiries, please forward your requests to cmango@vsu.edu.
