About Us

Virginia State University’s compliance program is built on the following seven key elements

  • Written standards of conduct, policies and procedures;
  • Designation of Compliance Officer;
  • Open lines of communication and effective, ongoing education; Internal monitoring and auditing;
  • Reporting and investigating;
  • Enforcement and discipline of compliance violations;

These elements work together to ensure that the University’s operations align with legal and regulatory requirements as well as facilitate a culture committed to ethical conduct. The benefits of this structure include but are not limited to:

  • Meaningful demonstration of the University’s commitment to ethics and compliance;
  • Proactive protection of the University from financial and reputational harm through risk mitigation measures;
  • Increased likelihood of early detection of potentially actionable conduct which allows the opportunity to correct the conduct and/or self-report as required; centralization of information, resources and guidance for fulfillment of compliance obligations;
  • Enhanced communication between and within university departments and business units;
  • Improved operational efficiency;
  • Culture of compliance that also encourages stakeholders to report potential misconduct without concern for retaliation;
  • Education opportunities for the university community about compliance-related topics (e.g., updates to relevant state and federal laws or regulations, workshops/trainings, etc.)
  • Promotion of personal and professional accountability in conduct to support the university’s commitment to institutional integrity.
