Virginia State University, founded in 1882, is one of Virginia's two land-grant institutions, and is located 23 miles south of Richmond in the village of Ettrick.
With a current student population of approximately 4,700, the University sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River with expansive views of Petersburg. Our 231-acre campus boasts 11 residence halls, 18 academic buildings and a 412-acre agriculture research facility.
VSU offers 31 baccalaureate degree programs 17 master’s degree programs, two doctoral degree programs, and seven certificates within six colleges: The College of Agriculture; The Reginald F. Lewis College of Business; The College of Education; The College of Engineering and Technology; The College of Humanities and Social Sciences; and The College of Natural and Health Sciences.
As a cornerstone of our community, we pride ourselves on our commitment to empowering people of all ages, abilities and ambitions. The newly formed VSU Cares is a community healthcare initiative that provides the uninsured and under-insured with free medical screenings and dental care. Serving five jurisdictions, with many more slated to join, our dual enrollment program allows qualified high school juniors and seniors to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and college course credits. Through various organizations and programs, our students provide countless hours of community service and assistance that directly impacts the lives of many.
