Federal CARES Act Quarterly Reporting Disclosure – April 10, 2024
CARES Act Student Funding
VSU signed the Certification Agreement for the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) on April 11, 2020 and submitted the Certification Agreement on April 16, 2020.
HEERF I Funds totaled $3,427,905 and was disbursed 100% as of July 31, 2020. Students were automatically selected and awarded 90% of the funds. Pell eligible students enrolled in spring 2020 received $995 in emergency aid. Other Title IV students received $565. (Please note: the Federal Pell Grant is usually awarded to undergraduates who have a high degree of unmet financial need. This is determined through the FAFSA application, in which the U.S. Department of Education examines the income and assets of the student and their family.) The remaining 10% of the student funds were distributed to students for emergencies via an application process. Students were communicated about the Federal CARES Act funds via email, website and other VSU social media.
HEERF II Funds totaled $3,427,905 and was disbursed 100% as of June 30, 2021. Students were automatically selected and awarded 90% of the funds. Pell eligible students enrolled in spring 2021 received $1,130 in emergency aid. Other Title IV students received $573. (Please note: the Federal Pell Grant is usually awarded to undergraduates who have a high degree of unmet financial need. This is determined through the FAFSA application, in which the U.S. Department of Education examines the income and assets of the student and their family.) The remaining 10% of the student funds were distributed to students for emergencies via an application process. Students were communicated about the Federal CARES Act funds via email, website and other VSU social media.
VSU received HEERF III Funds on May 14, 2021 for $9,355,676 and 100% was disbursed as of July 10, 2023. In fall 2021, 4,261 out of 4,300 students were automatically selected and awarded HEERF III funds. The total for fall 2021 equaled $1,870,894.50. All students that received a fall 2021 Pell grant disbursement (undergraduate) received $535.50. All other students received $309. (Please note: the Federal Pell Grant is usually awarded to undergraduates who have a high degree of unmet financial need. This is determined through the FAFSA application, in which the U.S. Department of Education examines the income and assets of the student and their family.) Students were communicated about the Federal CARES Act funds via email, website and other VSU social media.
In spring 2023, we disbursed $6,087,353 to 4,370 students out of 4,370 students enrolled. All students were sent an electronic survey to complete with a deadline of January 31, 2023. Pell grant recipients received $1,608 and all other students received $1,063. (Students who did not complete the electronic survey, automatically received a refund.)
In June 2023, the remaining $1,397,428.50 was automatically disbursed to 4,370 out of 4,370 students enrolled as an additional HEERF refund. No application or survey was required. Pell grant recipients received $370.11. All other students received $242.75. Students were communicated about the Federal CARES Act funds via email, website and other VSU social media.
CARES Act Institutional Funding
Virginia State University received $20,049,784 and $42,483,552 in Institutional support funds through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
