With Descendants Of Alfred W. Harris In Attendance And The Current Holder Of His Legislative Seat As Keynote Speaker, Founder’s Day Convocation Connected VSU’s Past To Its Present

Virginia State University celebrates 144 years of Greater.

Thursday, March 19, 2026, marked a meaningful day of celebration at Virginia State University, as members of the Trojan Family gathered in the Multi-Purpose Center for the annual Founder’s Day Convocation. Among those in attendance were three descendants of the University’s founder, Alfred W. Harris, adding a special connection to the historic occasion.

Founder’s Day Convocation serves as a time-honored tradition for reflection and recognition of Harris’s bold vision and enduring legacy. The observance continues the University’s Founder’s Day celebration held each year on the official anniversary, March 6, when members of the Trojan Family gather for the Laying of the Wreath Ceremony in honor of Alfred W. Harris.

This year’s keynote address was delivered by the Honorable Kimberly Pope Adams, who represents the 82nd District in the Virginia House of Delegates—the same district Harris represented when he successfully sponsored legislation establishing the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, now known as Virginia State University.

In addition to her role in public office, Pope Adams serves as Assistant Director of Financial Compliance and Operations at VSU. A dedicated member of the Trojan Family for nearly two decades, she exemplifies the leadership, service, and excellence that define the University.

“For a moment, I wondered if I was worthy of delivering the remarks on such a historic day,” Pope Adams said. “Then, President Abdullah reminded me that I am the delegate for Dinwiddie, and in that moment, my heart was flooded with pride. Pride not just in the title, but in the history behind it. Because in 1882, our founder was also the delegate for Dinwiddie. That connection, that continuity, that calling—it humbled me. It reminded me that this moment is not just about where we stand, but about whose shoulders we stand upon.”

Following her remarks, VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah invited Pope Adams to read the historic speech delivered by Delegate Harris in support of the legislation that established the University on March 6, 1882, bringing the past powerfully into the present.

Founder’s Day Convocation also featured words from student leaders and musical numbers from the VSU Concert Choir. The entire program was live-streamed and is available for re-watch on the University’s official Facebook page.

As Virginia State University celebrates 144 years of GREATER, Founder’s Day Convocation stands as a reminder that the legacy of Alfred W. Harris continues to inspire, guide, and shape the future of generations to come.
