VSU Trojan Explosion Marching Band Reaches Historic Milestone, Tops 200 Members for the First Time in School History

Record-breaking growth cements the Trojan Explosion's status as the largest marching band in the CIAA.

The Virginia State University Trojan Explosion Marching Band has reached a historic milestone. With more than 200 members for the 2026 season, the Trojan Explosion is now the largest marching band in University history, marking unprecedented growth for one of VSU's most visible and celebrated student organizations.

Already recognized as the largest marching band in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the Trojan Explosion's record-setting enrollment reflects the program's continued momentum and expanding national reputation. Students from across the country now make up the band's largest-ever roster, strengthening its position as a premier collegiate marching band and a powerful ambassador for Virginia State University.

The milestone comes after several years of national exposure and achievement. In recent years, the Trojan Explosion has performed at the White House, appeared on NBC's TODAY Show, entertained audiences at professional sporting events, earned multiple No. 1 ESPN Division II band rankings, and twice competed in the ESPN Band of the Year National Championship.

"Our growth is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire program," said Dr. Taylor Whitehead, Director of the Trojan Explosion Marching Band. "Over the past four years, our students have performed on some of the nation's biggest stages while representing Virginia State University with excellence. The growth we are experiencing today reflects the commitment of our students and staff, as well as the reputation the Trojan Explosion has built across the country."

The band's expansion can be seen throughout the organization, with several sections reaching historic participation levels. Among them is a 20-member tuba section, the largest in University history.

This fall, the Trojan Explosion will continue its national tour with performances throughout Virginia and North Carolina, as well as appearances in Orangeburg, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Rochester, New York; Dover, Delaware; and College Park, Maryland. The schedule includes football games, battle of the bands showcases, high school performances, and recruitment events that will introduce future students to Virginia State University.
