Virginia State University Names Honors College After Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Charlie W. Hill ’66
The prestigious recognition reflects Dr. Hill’s decades of advocacy for VSU and his steadfast dedication to expanding opportunities for its students
Virginia State University proudly announces the naming of its Honors College in honor of distinguished alumnus Dr. Charlie W. Hill ’66, a leader whose life and legacy exemplify excellence, service, and an unwavering commitment to his alma mater and community.
“Virginia State University helped shape the course of my life,” said Dr. Hill. “To see the Honors College carry my name is both humbling and deeply meaningful. I hope that it will inspire students to pursue excellence, serve with integrity, and use their education to make a lasting difference in the world.”
A proud graduate of Virginia State College, now Virginia State University, Dr. Hill built a career defined by visionary leadership and transformative impact. He retired as Executive Vice President of Human Resources for Landmark Media Enterprises after more than 40 years of executive leadership across the telecommunications, chemical, and media industries. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to principled leadership and the development of people, values that reflect the mission of the VSU Honors College.
Beyond his corporate accomplishments, Dr. Hill’s legacy is rooted in service. He is co-founder and President Emeritus of the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum and has served in leadership roles across numerous civic and professional organizations, championing access, opportunity, and advancement for underserved communities.
His devotion to Virginia State University stands as a cornerstone of his legacy. Appointed to the Virginia State University Board of Visitors in 2014, Dr. Hill served with distinction for eight years, helping guide the University through pivotal moments of growth. His leadership was marked by integrity and an unwavering focus on student success.
Dr. Hill’s commitment to developing future leaders is reflected in his establishment of the Charlie Hill Leadership Institute at VSU. A former ROTC cadet, he often credits his transformative student experiences with shaping his leadership philosophy. Inspired by the values of service, integrity, and character instilled during his time at VSU, he created the Institute to prepare students to lead with confidence, competence, and purpose.

Hill,” said Dr. Daniel Roberts, Dean of the Honors College. “Dr. Hill understands that honors education is about more than academic distinction. It is about cultivating curiosity, character, and a commitment to service.”
Founded in 1965, the Honors College serves the University’s most academically talented and highly motivated students through enriched coursework, mentorship, research engagement, and experiential learning.
In naming the Honors College after Dr. Hill, Virginia State University recognizes a leader whose professional excellence, civic engagement, and institutional stewardship embody the highest ideals of the University.
