Virginia State University Class Of 1976 Raises Nearly $320,000 During Golden Reunion
The funds will provide emergency financial assistance to VSU students and support the Class of 1976 Endowment Fund.
50 years after graduating from Virginia State University, members of the Class of 1976 are continuing to make Greater Happen Here. During Alumni Weekend in May, the University's Golden Class raised more than $319,947 to commemorate their 50th reunion and support future generations of Trojans.
More than 200 individual and business sponsors contributed to the fundraising effort. Proceeds will benefit the Class of 1976 Endowment Fund and the Student Tuition Assistance Fund, which provides emergency financial support to students facing unexpected hardships that could otherwise disrupt their education.
"We felt that it was important to have funds for future scholarships and also have money for students who may encounter hardships and need immediate assistance," said Virginia State University alumna and Class of 1976 Coordinator Dr. Evelyn Carter. "Greater Happened Here for all of us 50 years ago, and our goal was to show our appreciation for that while supporting future generations of Trojans. We encourage other classes of VSU to do the same."
Approximately 80 members of the Golden Class returned to campus during Alumni Weekend to reconnect with classmates, celebrate their shared legacy, and create new memories. The Class of 1976 was also recognized during Virginia State University's Spring 2026 Commencement ceremony, where they were honored before graduates, families, faculty, staff, and guests.
Virginia State University extends its heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed to the Class of 1976 Golden Reunion campaign. The remarkable generosity demonstrated by the Golden Class reflects the enduring bond between VSU and its alumni and highlights the transformative impact that alumni giving can have on current and future students.
The Class of 1976's contribution serves as a powerful example of how Trojan pride extends far beyond graduation, helping ensure that future generations have access to the opportunities, support, and educational experience that define Virginia State University.
