VSU Remembers Former President Jimmy Carter
Virginia State University mourns the passing of President Jimmy Earl Carter, Jr. Our university pays tribute to the 39th President for his dedication to ensuring that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) received the federal support needed to uphold their legacies of educational excellence and service to the nation.
Last year, VSU proudly launched our 2024 Black History Month commemoration with a program dedicated to examining President Carter's impact on Black colleges. During our "HBCUs and the American Presidency: A Preeminent History" public program, a leading official from Carter's White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities shared firsthand insights into the former President's compassion for our institutions.
We are forever grateful to Jimmy Carter for transforming HBCUs by signing Executive Order 12232, which reshaped the relationship between the nation and our schools. Virginia State University remains committed to fulfilling the educational mission that President Jimmy Carter helped us secure.
Rest Well,
President Jimmy Earl Carter, Jr.
