Virginia State University Will Hold Two Spring Commencement Ceremonies

The ceremonies will feature esteemed speakers, former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder and Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott.

Virginia State University is proud to announce the proceedings for the upcoming 2024 Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 11, 2024. The University will hold two graduation ceremonies, the first starting at 9:00 am and the second at 2:00 pm. Both will take place inside the VSU Multipurpose Center.

The two separate ceremonies will allow the growing number of VSU graduates to have more family and friends attend this momentous occasion.

Each ceremony will feature different VSU colleges and keynote speakers. The 9:00 am ceremony will celebrate graduates from the College of Education and College of Humanities & Social Sciences, with former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder delivering the keynote address.

Wilder broke barriers by becoming the first African American governor in the history of the United States when he was elected the 66th governor of Virginia in 1989. VSU commemorated his achievements and pioneering efforts for human rights by naming a building on campus the L. Douglas Wilder Building.

The 2:00 pm ceremony will celebrate graduates from the College of Agriculture, College of Engineering & Technology, College of Natural & Health Sciences, and the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business, with Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott as the guest speaker.

Congressman Scott has represented Virginia's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1993. His historic election in 1992 marked him as the first African American elected to Congress from Virginia since Reconstruction. Additionally, Congressman Scott is the first American with Filipino ancestry to serve as a voting member of Congress, a heritage he proudly shares through his maternal grandfather.

VSU is the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) ever selected to host a general election presidential debate, scheduled for October 1, 2024. The University is incredibly honored to welcome two significant political figures to campus to continue celebrating this historic distinction.
