Virginia State University Achieved 7th-Highest HBCU Endowment In 2023

VSU has surpassed $100 million in endowment funds and exceeds national averages for financial support per student.

Virginia State University is proud to announce that it had the seventh-highest endowment among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in 2023. This recognition is based on data from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) endowment study series, which analyzed colleges, universities, affiliated foundations, and related nonprofit organizations.

According to the study, VSU’s endowment surpassed $100 million. The average endowment value per full-time student at VSU was $22,903—higher than the national HBCU average. These figures underscore VSU’s commitment to enhancing financial support for its students, faculty, staff, and the broader community.

“2023 was a very fruitful year for the endowment status of Virginia State University,” said Tonya Hall, Vice President for Advancement and External Engagement. “Our goal is to continue growing our endowment by raising lasting funding and welcoming donations that enhance the transformative experiences we provide to our community.”

Endowment funding plays a critical role in the sustainability and empowerment of institutions like Virginia State University. As a university dedicated to providing underrepresented students with access to higher education, VSU leverages its endowment to foster student success and advance its mission.

Updated endowment totals are expected to be released in early 2025 as VSU continues to position itself as a leader in accessibility and excellence.
