University Statement Following On-Campus Shooting On August 14

VSU Community,

We want to keep you updated on the unfortunate early morning incident that happened on our campus. At approximately 12:30 a.m., a shooting occurred on the VSU campus, leaving two adult males and two adult females injured. All four victims were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The campus was immediately placed on lockdown until it was deemed safe.

Following a swift response from police officers, two suspects were taken into custody at the scene. None of the injured victims or suspects are enrolled at VSU for the Fall 2024 semester. The investigation is ongoing, with support from Chesterfield Police and Virginia State Police. At this point, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the VSU community.

In accordance with University protocol, RAVE alerts were sent via email to students and employees, providing safety information and real-time updates. We remind all VSU students, faculty, and staff to sign up for RAVE Alerts on their cell phones through the University’s official emergency notification system. You can sign up by visiting VSU.edu or download the RAVE Guardian mobile safety application for free on a smartphone to submit tips, photos, and videos directly to VSU Police.

The safety of our community remains our top priority, and we continually seek ways to enhance and improve our protocols. VSU Police maintain a strong presence on campus, ready to act swiftly in the event of any threat.

We recognize that this is a traumatic event, particularly for our first-year students who are still adjusting to campus life. If you need support, counseling services are available in Memorial Hall. Counselors can also be reached at the VSU Counseling Center at (804) 524-5939.

Remember, safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage everyone to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. If you see something, say something.
