VSU will not Increase Tuition for the 2021-2022 Academic Year

University Remains one of the Most Affordable Schools in Virginia

Virginia State University, VA-February 9, 2021 - In recognition of the economic challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced into families’ lives, Virginia State University today announced it will not increase tuition for the 2021-2022 academic year for new and continuing students.  This is the second consecutive year of no increase in tuition and fees at VSU.

Virginia State University currently maintains one of the lowest tuition and fee rates for any four-year public institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is a leader in access and affordability in higher education.  “We continue to set ourselves apart as a University that makes accessibility to a quality education our priority. We recognize that for many of our students, cost is a key factor,” says VSU President, Dr. Makola Abdullah.  “VSU will continue to look for additional revenue sources to ensure that the University remains affordable for students who want to attend.” Upward of 90 percent of VSU students receive financial aid. 70 percent of VSU students are Pell eligible.

Additionally, the Board of Visitors voted to hold room and board rates flat for the upcoming academic year.  “In this COVID environment, affordability is key to access. Our decision to keep VSU tuition, fees, and room and board affordable is consistent with the University’s goal of offering transformative opportunities by providing students access to a quality education,” says Huron F. Winstead, Rector of VSU Board of Visitors.

The VSU tuition rate will not increase for either in-state or out-of-state students.  Currently, Virginia residents pay $4,577 per semester (undergraduate) to attend VSU and an additional $5,772 per semester to reside on campus (room rates vary by residence hall).

Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the VSU Office of Institutional Advancement, in collaboration with the VSU Foundation University, has continued its commitment to provide scholarship assistance to students so that they can focus on their academic dreams.
