A Tragic Loss for Our Trojan Community
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to share that VSU student Daniel N. Wharton of Alexandria, VA has passed away as a result of an off-campus shooting. The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. on December 5, 2021 at University Apartments at Ettrick (UAE). The 19-year-old VSU freshman was taken to a local hospital, and we learned that unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries hours later. Wharton was a Computer Engineering major at Virginia State University.
We are devastated and deeply saddened by the news of our fallen Trojan. It is most difficult and painful to have such a young life cut short as a result of gun violence. This is a tragedy in every sense of the word. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family, friends, and our entire Trojan community.
Students who may need counseling during this difficult time are encouraged to contact the University Counseling Center at (804)524-5939 during business hours or (804)524-5411 after hours.
Our Trojan family’s safety is one of our top priorities at Virginia State University. VSU Police believe this is an isolated incident, and they are working diligently with Chesterfield County Police in this ongoing investigation.
If anyone has information about this homicide, please contact VSU Police or Chesterfield County Police.
Sincerely,
Makola M. Abdullah, Ph.D.
President
