VSU To Become First Public HBCU In Virginia To Offer Masters Of Business Administration
The new degree allows VSU to address the underrepresentation of Blacks/African Americans in the business management and leadership profession.
Virginia State University is proud to announce that its College of Business has been approved to offer a new Master of Business Administration (MBA) program by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV). When the new graduate degree program goes into effect for Fall 2024, VSU will be the first public Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Virginia to offer an MBA in Business Administration.
The Master of Business Administration program will be available in both traditional face-to-face and fully online delivery formats, ensuring students benefit from an engaging and flexible learning experience facilitated by the University's faculty.
Students pursuing their MBA at VSU will be equipped to become business executives and managers across diverse economic sectors. The program will offer comprehensive training in essential business disciplines, including accounting, finance, computer information systems, data analytics, strategic management, and marketing. Upon graduation, students will be capable of developing sound business plans by evaluating financial statements, organizational structures, IT requirements, and branding needs. Graduates will also have the knowledge and skills to start a new business.
According to a 2023 Corporate Recruiters Survey conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), MBA graduates had an estimated median starting salary of $125,000.
Additionally, with a student population that is over 90 percent Black/African-Americans, the program will allow VSU to address the underrepresentation of Blacks/African Americans in the business management and leadership profession.
“The approval of the new Master of Business Administration program is a milestone achievement and aligns with our mission to prepare students for success in all areas of business,” said Dr. Emmanuel Omojokun, Dean of Reginald F. Lewis College of Business. “I am confident this program will equip our diverse population of men and women with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to thrive in today’s ever-evolving world of business.”
Business Administration will be the 13th Master's degree program offered at VSU and the first housed within the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business. Students interested in pursuing a Master of Business Administration will be required to complete a total of 36 credit hours. A capstone course will also be required to expose students to real-world business scenarios while gaining valuable experience in making informed decisions and implementing effective strategies.
