What is Family and Consumer Sciences?
The programs within the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences are designed to provide students with a broad background in the Human Sciences subject areas. Family and Consumer Sciences is an ideal major for students who are interested in the Human Sciences; the study of how human beings relate to and interact with their natural and social environments. Family and Consumer Sciences empowers individuals and families across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society.
Family and Consumer Sciences is a discipline that involves creativity, innovation and workforce development. The aim of the Program is to provide students comprehensive training in subject matters such as foods and nutrition, dietetics, textiles and clothing, fashion, human development, housing, family, child, community development, teacher education, and resource management. Students who enroll in the Department receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. Students have the unique opportunity to specialize in one of the concentration areas: Family, Child, and Community Services, Dietetics, and Textile, Apparel, Merchandising, and Management. In addition, students have the opportunity to receive a secondary teacher education endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences.
MISSION - The mission of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is to provide quality educational experiences that prepare students to integrate the Family and Consumer Sciences body of knowledge into practice and who, are committed to applying these principles to individuals in our diverse society.
FACS VISION 2020:
- Prepare entry-level FCS professionals
- Translate knowledge into practice
- Equip individuals with the skills needed to make informed decisions about their well being and relationships
- Equip individuals with resources in order to achieve optimal quality of life
