Mass Communications Graduation
Graduation is not automatic. Earning the required credit hours and GPA is essential, but you must also complete a formal graduation application
process to be certified as a degree candidate, included in commencement, and issued a diploma. Beginning this process early and staying in close contact with your advisor during your final year will ensure nothing stands between you and your degree. You can begin your graduation application by logging Banner 9 when you have met your degree requirements and click on the corresponding links in the process.
VSU confers degrees three times per year: in May, August, and December. Each conferral date has its own application deadline, and missing that deadline can delay your graduation by an entire semester. Plan accordingly.
Applying for Graduation
Students must submit a graduation application during the semester prior to their anticipated degree completion. For example, if you plan to graduate in May, you should submit your application during the preceding fall semester. Check the academic calendar published by the Registrar's Office for the exact application deadline for each conferral period.
You submit the graduation application through Banner 9. The application initiates your official degree audit, which verifies that you have completed, or are on track to complete, all requirements for your degree. Once your application is submitted, the Registrar will review your academic record and notify you of your degree clearance status or any outstanding requirements you need to resolve.
A graduation application fee may be required. Contact the Registrar's Office for current fee information.
The Degree Audit Process
After you submit your graduation application, the Registrar's Office conducts a comprehensive degree audit. This audit cross-references your completed coursework, in-progress courses, and pending transfer credits against your degree program requirements. The audit is the official determination of whether you have met all graduation requirements.
If deficiencies are identified, you will be notified and given an opportunity to address them. Common deficiencies include missing elective credits, unfulfilled general education categories, or outstanding major requirements. Work with your advisor immediately if deficiencies are found, as some issues can be resolved within the current semester while others may require additional coursework that pushes your graduation to a later term.
Commencement Participation
VSU holds one commencement ceremony each year, typically in May. Students completing degrees in August or December may participate in the May ceremony either before or after their degree is conferred, subject to university policies in place at the time. Specific eligibility guidelines for participating in a ceremony before or after your conferral date should be confirmed with the Registrar's Office.
To participate in commencement, you must have completed or be within a specified number of remaining credit hours from completing all degree requirements. Your graduation application must be on file and your degree clearance must be either confirmed or pending final coursework completion.
Cap, Gown, and Regalia
Academic regalia, including your cap and gown, must be purchased or rented through the VSU Bookstore or the university's designated regalia vendor. Information on ordering regalia is distributed through the Registrar's Office and the Dean's Office during the semester preceding commencement. Order regalia early, as deadlines apply and late orders may not be fulfilled in time for the ceremony.
Your Diploma
Your diploma is issued after your degree is officially conferred, not at the commencement ceremony itself. Diplomas are mailed to the address you provide on your graduation application. Ensure your mailing address is current and accurate before submitting your application. Name changes or corrections to the name appearing on your diploma should be addressed with the Registrar's Office before your degree is conferred.
Postponing Graduation
If you submit a graduation application and then discover you will not complete your requirements in time, contact the Registrar's Office promptly to update your graduation term. Delaying your application update can cause complications with your student record. Your advisor can help you assess your timeline and develop a plan for completion. You will have to apply for graduation again if you do not graduate.
After Graduation
After your degree is conferred, you can request official transcripts showing your completed degree through the Registrar's Office. VSU also connects you with alumni services and professional networks through the alumni affairs office. Career Services remains available to VSU alumni navigating career transitions, job searches, and professional development.
