All-Steinway School   

For over 170 years, Steinway and Sons pianos have been the standard of quality and remains the peerless instrument for uncompromising expression. In 2023, the Virginia State University Department of Music became an All-Steinway School. As one of only 5 Historical Black Colleges and Universities in the nation with All-Steinway status, VSU offers its students unparalleled educational facilities through its state-of-the-art pianos. This includes the department's recent acquisition of a Steinway Spirio D, the premiere grand piano of the company which incorporates groundbreaking technology that allows students to hear piano performances and participate in piano masterclasses around the globe right here on the campus of Virginia State University. Becoming an All-Steinway School demonstrates our university’s full commitment to excellence by providing our students and faculty with the finest Steinway pianos for the study of music and performance at the highest level. Steinway Dedication Festival

To celebrate this amazing achievement, the Department of Music hosted our Steinway Dedication Festival on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in Davis Recital Hall on the campus of Virginia State University. This all-day event served as the official celebration of Virginia State University becoming an All-Steinway School. The event included a young artist competition and guest performances by renowned pianists Dr. Russell Hirshfield (Professor of Music at Western Connecticut State University) and Dr. Miles Massicotte (Director of Keyboard Studies at Virginia State University). Representatives from the Steinway & Sons company was at the event to officially present the All-Steinway plaque to the Chairman of the Department of Music, Dr. Samuel Rowley and Director of Keyboard Studies, Dr. Miles Massicotte.
