Why VSU Honors?

The Honors Experience

The Honors College purposefully unites scholars from every major and discipline to build a vibrant, interdisciplinary community. By fostering a culture of innovation and fresh perspectives, we enrich the entire Virginia State University campus. Joining our ranks also unlocks a distinct set of exclusive academic and professional benefits.

Transformative Mentorship

Academic mentorship isn't just a part of the Honors College—it is the heart of our experience. Through individualized study plans, independent research opportunities, and advanced coursework, our students secure dedicated, one-on-one collaboration with exceptional faculty from across the university.

This close, sustained partnership provides more than just academic guidance; it offers the chance to forge powerful, professional relationships that truly stand the test of time. For many Honors College alumni, the opportunity to build these enduring connections with faculty remains the most important and career-defining aspect of their entire college journey.

Pioneers in Practice

At the VSU Honors College, scholarly work is not optional—it is the pioneering mandate of an Honors education. We require every student to engage in sustained research, scholarship, or creative endeavor, fostering a culture where intellectual curiosity becomes groundbreaking output.

This commitment yields remarkably varied work: from scientists leading cutting-edge lab and field investigations to humanists performing critical archival excavations; from innovators designing impactful business solutions to artists debuting original exhibitions and recitals.

The apex of this journey is the Honors capstone project. This culminating activity is a fully mentored experience, designed by the student and a faculty advisor, that challenges our graduates to make a tangible, original contribution to their field, ensuring they exit VSU not just as graduates, but as intellectual trailblazers.

Study Abroad

The VSU Honors College strongly encourages students to think globally and embrace study abroad. We combine the academic rigor of Honors—interdisciplinary, self-directed learning—with a global focus on cultural competencies and diversity of thought.

We offer programs specifically tailored to Honors students, featuring past destinations such as Ghana, Japan, and South Africa. Crucially, the Honors College contributes significant funding to these short-term programs to make them more affordable and accessible to all Honors students.

Honors students can also earn credit through VSU's broader offerings like Oxford, Semester at Sea, and various European programs.

Honors Housing

As the Honors College is an intentional learning community that is both experience-based and residence-based, Quad 1A, a co-ed Honors Residence Hall, is available for Honors scholars’ use. This residential learning environment is a joint effort between the Honors College and the Office of Residence Life to create a model living-learning center (LLC). This LLC experience is designed to acclimate students to collegiate Honors education, focusing on developing skills to enhance students’ academic success and to reinforce a variety of essential life skills. Students residing in this Honors community have access to a common space for meetings and discussions, study lounges, and research space.
