Women’s Executive LeadHERship Academy (WELA)
A Bold New Chapter in LeadHERship at Virginia State University
The Women’s LeadHERship Institute (WLI) is proud to introduce the Women’s Executive LeadHERship Academy (WELA)—a transformative leadership experience designed to empower, elevate, and equip women leaders at Virginia State University and beyond.
WELA is more than a leadership program—it is a community designed to support women as they grow, lead, and expand their impact. Through intentional leadership development, mentorship, and connection, participants will be encouraged to explore their strengths, clarify their vision, and take meaningful steps toward their next level of leadership.
Through four immersive sessions, mentorship opportunities, and a supportive sister circle, WELA participants will engage in experiences that foster vision, resilience, confidence, innovation, and purpose-driven leadership.
WELA is designed for women who are ready to:
- Strengthen their leadership skills and confidence
- Define and pursue their professional and personal goals
- Expand their leadership impact within VSU and their communities
- Build meaningful relationships with other women leaders
- Embrace mentorship, innovation, and continued growth

Nominations are now open for the 2026–2027 WELA cohort.

How to Apply
Step 1: Complete the Nomination Form
The nomination form must be completed by a supervisor, WLI Board Member, or senior leader.
Step 2: Complete the Application Form
After being nominated, the prospective participant must complete the WELA application.
Step 3: Submit Required Documentation
Applicants should prepare the following documents in PDF format only:
- Résumé or CV — Maximum of 2 pages
- Statement of Interest — 500–750 words addressing:
- Your leadership experience and aspirations
- How WELA aligns with your professional and leadership goals
- Your commitment to mentorship, innovation, and community engagement
Scholarship Assistance
Scholarship assistance may be available for eligible participants.
To be considered for scholarship assistance, complete the WELA Scholarship Form.
Please note: Only applicants who have been accepted into WELA are eligible to apply for a scholarship.
